The NSW Public Accounts Committee is holding a public hearing on Friday 14 October to follow up issues raised in the Audtor-General's performance audit of Metropolitan Bus Services.

Committee Chairman and Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea announced the Committee is seeking information from the Department of Transport about what it is doing to implement the Auditor-General's recommendations.

"The Committee is following up on areas of highest priority, and buses are a key service for the people of Sydney, especially in areas like the Northern Beaches/North Shore," Mr O'Dea said.

"The Auditor-General completed his performance audit report on Improving the Performance of Metropolitan Bus Services in March 2010, while the former Labor Government was still in power.

"Among other conclusions in the 2010 report, the Auditor-General found in some suburbs around a quarter of services ran late, and up to one in four people claim they were left behind at a bus stop at least once a week.

"The Auditor-General has suggested better benchmarks be put in place to hold operators accountable and penalties for those who fail," Mr O'Dea said.

"This hearing provides an opportunity for the Committee to hear from the Department of Transport directly. We are looking forward to finding out more about what the Department is doing to implement the Auditor-General's recommendations and its plans for the future of bus services in Sydney," Mr O'Dea said.

"The Public Hearing will be conducted in the Macquarie Room at Parliament House and the Committee plans to report on its findings by the end of this year," Mr O'Dea concluded.
