Speaking in NSW Parliament last night, Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea highlighted the need for greater infrastructure to support cycling.

Mr O'Dea said the previous Labor Government's failure to deliver on its promise of a cycling path along the North Shore rail track was "disappointing".

"With better planning, a shared cyclist/pedestrian bridge over Boundary Street could have been built simultaneously with the Roseville rail bridge upgrade, providing a critical link for cyclists," Mr O'Dea said.

"As a result, any dedicated bike path along the North Shore rail line will be left without a vital missing link; forcing cyclists to use the Pacific Highway, Archer Street or Hill Street, all of which involve busy intersections with Boundary Street.

"Cycling is an excellent way to stay fit and has been proven to reduce the chance of developing lifestyle diseases. Economic benefits of cycling are also becoming increasingly significant as it eases the pain of the petrol pump.

"Bike riding is socially inclusive; for all ages and levels, for individuals or groups regardless of socioeconomic situations. Cycling ticks many boxes," Mr O'Dea said.

"Mountain biking also has a growing following and I am pleased that redevelopment plans for the Belrose landfill site will largely deliver an outdoor recreation area, including a mountain biking facility.

"By providing outdoor infrastructure and attractive options to stay active, we counter the economic, physical and emotional toll of inactivity.

"I want my community to have an environment and infrastructure that fosters and promotes a healthy lifestyle, reinforcing the active and sporting lifestyle that has been a cornerstone of Australia's heritage," Mr O'Dea concluded.
