Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea has reminded the community that time is running out to honour the valuable and selfless work of carers through this year's NSW Carers Awards.

Nominations for this year's awards must be lodged by next Friday (22 July) and application kits are available on the Carers NSW website, www.carersnsw.asn.au

"Last year, two Award Recipients came from Davidson – Sue O'Reilly of Forestville, and 9 year old Jameson Smith of St Ives.

"Once again this year the community is invited to nominate a carer, family or an organisation that has made an outstanding contribution as a carer, or to carers," Mr O'Dea said.

There are eight categories:

  • Young Carer
  • Senior Carer
  • Caring Partner
  • Carer-friendly Workplace
  • Carer Support Group
  • Caring Family or Parent
  • Caring Volunteer or Community Member
  • Caring School

"Over 150 recipients will be honoured during the 2011 NSW Carers Week from 16-22 October. Eight ambassadors, representing carers from each of the eight categories will be invited to a State ceremony on Monday, 17 October, where the 2011 NSW Carer of the Year will be announced, Mr O'Dea said.

"The NSW Carers Awards provide a wonderful opportunity to honour a carer support organisation or individual that provides care and support to a family member, friend, student, or colleague. Grants are also available for local councils to host events for the winners of the 2011 NSW Carers Awards.

"I look forward to the community participating in the nomination process and to the NSW Carers Awards being announced during NSW Carers Week in October," Mr O'Dea concluded.
