Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea has welcomed a visit to the electorate by the Minister for Ageing, Andrew Constance.
"In the 2006 census, more than 22% of the Davidson population was over 60 – well above the Sydney average of 16.7%," Mr O'Dea said.
The Minister's visit to St Ives Uniting Church on Sunday (19 June) is for 'Wear Purple Day', highlighting the Church's annual 'Respect for Seniors' celebration and acknowledging World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The Minister for Ageing said, “We can all do something to prevent the abuse of seniors; looking out for each other can make a difference. Help is available, but often older people are isolated and too afraid to speak out,” he said.
The need to care for the aged in our community is highlighted by the ageing of the population as the so-called 'Baby Boomers' reach retirement.
Mr O'Dea said, "All levels of Government, Federal, State and Local, need to play their part in providing services to benefit the well-being and lifestyle of older persons."
Mr O'Dea highlighted "The Shed" at St Ives Showground as a shining example of Local and State Governments working together, in this case to provide $132,000 for a purpose built facility that provides seniors with facilities for woodwork, metalwork, handicrafts, cooking and free internet access.
He also paid tribute to the various private and corporate service providers in the electorate, including the operators of various retirement villages and nursing homes.
"Equally, it is important to recognise that many elderly people choose to stay in their own homes rather than move to institutions, a choice that society should support through various community programs, including home-based palliative care," Mr O'Dea said.
