Member for Davidson Jonathan O'Dea, is encouraging the community to get behind a campaign for the proposed National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Demand for government funded disability services is increasing by around 10% every year, which is putting an enormous strain on the state system.

“If Australians are serious about the most vulnerable people in our society, an NDIS must be supported,” Mr O'Dea said.

Minister for Disability Services, Andrew Constance, has released the NSW Government’s submissions to the Productivity Commission, which has called for a new way of funding in its draft report.

The Commission found that the current system is ‘underfunded, unfair, fragmented, inefficient, and gives people with a disability little choice and no certainty of access to appropriate supports.’

“The NSW Government, through Stronger Together 2, will provide $2 billion for disability services over the next five years. But beyond that time, a new funding source will be needed,” said Mr O'Dea.

“People with a disability, their families and carers deserve the kind of long term certainty that only an NDIS can deliver.”

The Every Australian Counts campaign is the best way for people to get behind the NDIS.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to fight hard for the futures of people with a disability in our community,” concluded Mr O'Dea.

The final report of the Productivity Commission’s Inquiry into Disability Care and Support will be presented to the Federal Government on the 31 July 2011.
