As India struggles to establish facilities for the Commonwealth Games, it's been revealed the NSW Government is facing similar problems much closer to home.
This week's report of a ceiling collapse in the stadium for the Commonwealth Games Weightlifting has its parallel at the recently completed Lindfield Railway Station, according to the Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea.
"An examination of the empty RailCorp shopfronts, facing the Pacific Highway at Lindfield, shows one with its entire ceiling on the floor. Apparently water entered the roof cavity causing the ceiling to collapse," Mr O'Dea.
"In India, just two or three panels are reported to have been dislodged, but at Lindfield Railway Station the whole ceiling now lies in waste on the floor," he said.
"The Lindfield Station upgrade was completed just last year, prompting questions over the NSW Government's check on quality of workmanship before the job was signed off.
"What action is being taken to ensure the collapse isn't repeated elsewhere in the station, including the ticket box, office complex or areas open to the public?" Mr O'Dea asked.
"What is the cost of repairs and who will pay for them?
"The impact of the collapse could have been far worse, had the shop been tenanted. The mixture of water and live electrical wires could have been fatal," Mr O'Dea said.
"The whole incident raises even more questions over planning, given the four shops, fronting the Pacific Highway have remained vacant since they were completed more than 12 months ago.
"At least in India, there are plans to use the facilities soon," Mr O'Dea said.
At Lindfield it seems the NSW Labor Government still has no-one to occupy the four shops, questions to answer over quality control and future safety, and even more questions relating to financial responsibility," Mr O'Dea concluded.
