Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has thrown his support behind the local Jabulani Challenge – a 26 and 42 km bush run or trail walk through some of Davidson’s best-known bushland areas.

“Over the past five years, the Jabulani Challenge has been organised by a group of Davidson residents, concerned about the plight of people in Southern Africa. I commend them on their fantastic initiative, which was recently the subject of a speech I delivered in the NSW Parliament,” Mr O’Dea said.

“The group sees the most immediate need as providing food for schoolchildren who do not receive sufficient nutrition and sustenance. As a result, funds raised from this year’s Challenge will again help feed hundreds of children each day at a school in Kayamandi, South Africa.

“Good nutrition can lead to an improved ability to learn and education is proven to be one of the best ways to lead poorer communities out of poverty,” Mr O’Dea said.

Event organizer, Graeme Elgie said, “Adidas designed the Jabulani ball for the World Cup and while the Cup might be over, the Jabulani Challenge awaits to be tackled.

“It’s an opportunity for those who have sat on the couch watching the Jabulani ball to get on their feet for the Jabulani Challenge and at the same time raise much needed funds for the children of Southern Africa.”

“The funding is supervised by the Stellenbosch Community Development Programme, a local community charity supporting the Kayamandi School, with all donations tax deductible and 95% of funds raised going directly to children,” Mr Elgie said.

“Competitors are encouraged to seek sponsorship, while friends and colleagues are encouraged to respond through financial commitments. Teams of 2 or more, especially comprising school students, are particularly encouraged to take part,” Mr Elgie concluded.

The 26 and 42 km events will be held on Sunday 25 July and further information, including local contacts and registration details can be found at www.jabulanichallenge.com
