Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has assisted in efforts to set a World Record for the largest-ever driving lesson.

The Australia-wide attempt also focused attention on Fatality Free Friday, a nationwide campaign to encourage safe driving and keep the nation’s roads fatality free on Friday, 28 May.

“The attempt to establish the World’s Largest Driving Lesson involved more than 180 drivers with their instructors in 10 locations across the country, simultaneously taking part in a driving lesson,” Mr O’Dea said.

“One of the venues was the Honda Australia Roadcraft Training (HART) Centre at St. Ives and I was asked to witness and verify the local participation. Provided the attempt clears all the necessary criteria, it will be recognized in the Guinness World Book of Records,” Mr O’Dea said.

State Manager for HART, Rod Hill said, “Many people are not aware that we have a dedicated world class road safety facility in the local area.

“We are proud to support the world record attempt and help promote Fatality Free Friday,” Mr Hill said.

“I encourage everyone to visit the www.fatalityfreefriday.com website and take the Fatality Free Friday Road Safety Pledge,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Visitors to the site are encouraged to print off the pledge and make a promise to themselves to go safely on the road. There’s no need to leave personal details and it doesn’t cost anything – but it could save a life,” Mr O’Dea said.

“It is hoped that if drivers consciously think about safer driving for even just one Friday a year, that day’s toll, statistically around 5.3 deaths, could be reduced to nil.

“Over time, driving habits may change to make our roads safer throughout the year,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
