Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has welcomed a decision by the elected Warringah Council to support Mountain Biking on the WSN landfill site at Belrose once landfill operations have ceased.
Council officers had recommended the site be rehabilitated for public uses involving only informal passive recreation.
“I spoke against the recommendation in addressing last night’s full meeting of the Council,” Mr O’Dea.
“I thank the Council for the opportunity to reflect the views of many in the community who love the sport of Mountain Biking and those who generally support outdoor activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.
“Mountain bikers have been restricted in the use of land for their sport and the rehabilitated landfill site provides an ideal opportunity to create tracks for their activity,” he said.
“I congratulate the Warringah Councillors for unanimously resolving contrary to the Council officers’ recommendation and making provision for Mountain Biking and possibly Horse Riding on the rehabilitated site.
“It is a decision for common sense and acknowledges the ongoing calls by the Mountain Biking fraternity for better local facilities,” Mr O’Dea said.
“Warringah Council is committed to actively consulting with local residents over the future use of the Belrose landfill site,” Mayor Michael Regan said.
“I would encourage all relevant stakeholders, including sporting groups, Council representatives and local resident groups to actively participate in the regular Community Advisory Committee meetings, which have ongoing input into the management and future of the Belrose landfill site,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
