In a speech today in Parliament, Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea spoke about ongoing difficulties with obtaining information on local planning issues, highlighting the urgent need for a NSW Information Commissioner.

“In making a Freedom of Information (FOI) Application on matters concerning Ku-ring-gai Planning and the Treadstone Report, I have been required to send four separate cheques on four separate occasions over four months,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Why has it been necessary to keep sending cheques and why has the response to the FOI application, dating back to 9 November 2009, taken so long to address?

“It is clear there is an urgent need for an Information Commissioner, who has the power to ensure, among other things, that public information is made available in a timely manner, “ Mr O’Dea said.

Following local community groups and MPs raising concerns with previous methodology used to project new dwelling numbers under the draft Town Centres LEP, the Government appointed Treadstone to conduct a so called  ‘independent’ review.

“However, why did the Government request Treadstone to consult with local developers and development industry professionals only?

“The NSW Labor Government announced some time ago that it would appoint an Information Commissioner, but we are still waiting,” Mr O’Dea said.

“What is the reason for the long delay in establishing this important new position? Why has process been abused with my FOI application over Ku-ring-gai planing and the Treadstone report?  Something smells bad.

“The longer the government stalls, the louder the questions become and the more urgent the need for an Information Commissioner,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
