Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is calling on the NSW Government to formerly extend the Garigal National Park by including a 10 hectare area, currently within the boundaries of the WSN Environmental Services (WSN) site at Belrose.

“Under previous agreements the WSN owned land can not be used for landfill and is preserved in a natural bush state,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I am calling on the Government to include the land as part of Garigal National Park BEFORE it goes ahead with its planned sale of WSN Environmental Services.

“This valuable area of native bushland, adjacent to Bare Creek, should be preserved for all to enjoy into the future. It will also provide an additional refuge and habitat for native animals, close to suburbia within the Sydney metropolitan area,” he said.

“Following prompting by myself, with the local community, WSN Environmental Services has offered to hand over the 10 hectare site for inclusion in an extended National Park.

“The Environment Minister’s December 2009 response to my written question made it clear the Government was unaware of the offer from WSN.

“More recently, I spoke with the National Parks and Wildlife Service Area Manager, who welcomed the proposal and indicated acceptance of the offer.

“It now requires action from the Government to transfer the land and to formalise the agreement to extend the Garigal National Park,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I urge the government to act quickly, given the sale of WSN Environmental Services has already been foreshadowed.

“I will be speaking on this matter when NSW Parliamentary sittings resume this week.

“I have likewise supported the transfer of further hectares of land, near Wakehurst Parkway and Narrabeen Lagoon into Garigal National Park," Mr O'Dea concluded.
