Shadow Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli and Local Member for Davidson Jonathan O’Dea today slammed the Keneally Labor Government for failing to provide Year 12 students studying their HSC with a qualified maths teacher.
This follows revelations today that Year 12 students at Davidson High had been left without a qualified HSC 2 Unit maths teacher and had been forced to teach themselves using the Internet.
Mr Piccoli said the situation had highlighted State Labor’s misguided priorities on education.
“Labor needs to stop focusing on spin and make sure our students get the support they need in the classroom,” Mr Piccoli said.
“Kristina Keneally must get the basics right like making sure there are teachers standing up in front of classrooms full of kids.
“Verity Firth and Michael Coutts-Trotter have been out in the media today trying to spin the issue, but the reality is this problem should have been fixed earlier.
“The NSW Labor Government were warned two years ago by the Auditor General in NSW that there was going to be a chronic teacher shortage, and now we’re seeing the consequences of that.”
Local Member for Davidson Jonathan O’Dea said students deserved better from the public education system.
“The HSC is an important year for students, and most parents would expect their children would be taught by a qualified teacher,” Mr O’Dea said.
"This situation is appalling and reflects State Labor's twisted priorities and mismanagement of school education.
“For students, parents and teacher at Davidson High this is totally unacceptable and must be addressed immediately.”
