Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has highlighted a concern regarding a HSC 2 Unit Maths class at Davidson High School, a school with normally outstanding academic performance.

As the previous teacher retired last year, and no replacement has been secured, the students have had to teach themselves using the internet.

“Apparently there was a new teacher, who only taught the children in the classroom for one day.  Since then, another teacher has supervised the students in a spare room.  However, what makes the situation laughable is that the teacher has no Maths qualifications and is there merely to supervise the students,” Mr O’Dea said.

"This situation is appalling and reflects both Labor's twisted priorities and mismanagement of school education.

“It is totally unacceptable and must be addressed immediately, which has now been promised", said Mr O’Dea.

Mrs Cheralyn Darcey, a parent of a student at the school, said “This situation is jeopardizing all of these students' futures.

“I’m starting a tutor this week but can only afford one session a week, at $60. Anyway, tutors are for revision and help, not to teach foundation.  That’s what my taxes are for!

“Every day they are slipping behind. We don’t need a website called MySchool to tell us about our kids education, we don’t need a fence!  We need action …. we need TEACHERS!” added Mrs Darcey.

On contacting the Department of Education to complain, Cheralyn was advised that “They are not the only Year 12 class without a teacher”.

"Labor is throwing money at fences and halls but can't provide a qualified 2 Unit Maths teacher for HSC students at Davidson High.  It's a totally unacceptable situation!", Mr O’Dea concluded.
