Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has welcomed a decision to install additional 40km/hour flashing school zone lights in Roseville and St Ives.

“This is great news for the associated school communities, including the teachers, staff, parents and especially the students.

“Research shows the flashing lights bring added protection to our children, especially the very young, as they walk in high traffic areas outside schools,” Mr O’Dea said.

The flashing lights are to be installed on Archbold Road at Roseville Public School and on Eastern Arterial Road and Horace Street at St Ives High School and St Ives Public School.

“I have been involved in the campaigns for school zone lights at both locations and I congratulate the respective school communities for their work in highlighting the need for improved safety measures,” Mr O’Dea said.

“At Roseville, research by Ku-ring-gai Council found that motorists have been illegally stopping on the traffic light crossing up to 30 times a day or 150 times a week, making it hazardous for school children and others to cross.

“This is in addition to other offences at the site, including speeding and running the red light.

“At St Ives, Horace Street and Eastern Arterial Road become extremely busy during peak periods, especially in the morning.

“The introduction of 40km/hour flashing school zone lights outside St Ives Primary and High Schools is expected to reduce the incidents of vehicles failing to stop for children crossing legally at traffic lights and speeding through the school zone.

“The welcome addition of the flashing school zone lights is expected to be completed by 30 June 2010,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
