Reports that the cost of the proposed Sydney CBD Metro has blown out by billions of dollars is not surprising and further derails northern rail projects, according to Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea.

“Initial estimates by the government put the project cost at around $4 billion but revised estimates reportedly now place the figure as high as $7 billion.

“If this ill-conceived project goes ahead, the ultimate cost is anyone’s guess. It’s yet another example of a desperate State Government in disarray,” Mr O’Dea said.

“The blowout leaves less space for a desperately needed second Sydney Harbour rail crossing, enabling better links to Sydney’s north.

“It also leaves less money for new transport infrastructure, particularly in growing suburbs such as St Ives, which is currently outside of the suburban rail network.

“The possibility of a rail link to the Northern Beaches and an expansion of light rail are also placed in further jeopardy by irresponsible spending on a highly questionable project,” Mr O’Dea said.

“When elected to government, the Liberal/National Coalition will scrap the ill-conceived Sydney CBD Metro and ensure the funds are used to address areas of greater need – initially, the northwest and southwest rail lines,” Mr O’Dea said.
