Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is urging the community to consider the benefits of taking part in Walk to Work Day this Friday (2 October).

Mr O’Dea said the annual Walk to Work Day encourages people to walk regularly as part of a healthy lifestyle.

“The annual event is a great initiative to remind those who do not pay close attention to their health that being active need not cost a lot of money nor necessarily be physically strenuous,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I regularly walk to and from work and as time permits, walk for relaxation,” he said.

“If walking to work is out of the question, then walking at least one kilometre to your first appointment is encouraged,” Mr O’Dea said.

“The Pedestrian Council of Australia, which organises the annual event, is encouraging individuals to register online at www.walk.com.au as ‘Walking Class Heroes’ and enter a free competition to win a walking holiday for 2 in New Zealand.

“Evidence suggests that a lack of physical activity can double the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

“There are also indications that a lack of activity increases the risk of certain cancers, high blood pressure, lipid disorders, osteoporosis, depression and anxiety.

“On the other hand it’s suggested regular physical activity along with a healthy diet can result in fewer sick days and absenteeism as well as increased productivity and creativity.

“Walk to Work Day provides an ideal launching pad for a regular exercise regime, or increasing an existing exercise program to achieve a better personal lifestyle and a cleaner environment,” Mr O’Dea said.
