Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea will meet with Ken Kanofski, Chief Executive Officer of WSN Environmental Solutions on Monday over concerns to extend the life and size of the WSN site at Belrose.

WSN Management wants to dump an additional 160,000 tonnes of garbage and extend the life of the garbage landfill facility by four years.

There will be an ongoing impact on local residents through possible noise, dust, odour and other pollution while in the longer term the extension will change the contours, shape and height of the facility and ultimately water run-off flows, which could be contaminated.

“The community is holding WSN to its signed 2004 agreement that any such extension of the facility would require a Development Application. In addition, an independent assessment of a Development Application by Warringah Council would boost confidence in the final outcome for all concerned,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I am also seeking assurances over rehabilitation of the site and its future use, once the tip is full. There is need for stronger undertakings over future use of the site, including the provision of recreational facilities,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Early this year WSN unilaterally removed a restriction on land use, contrary to previous assurances to the community.

“The NSW Government must ‘come clean’ on its involvement in this issue, particularly in light of the foreshadowed sale of WSN, a government corporation,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I recently asked written questions of WSN Shareholder Minister, Joe Tripodi, which required simple, straightforward replies. His contemptuous responses dismally failed to provide proper answers.

“I importantly asked if and when the WSN Board and/or the Government approved this action and whether the NSW Government condoned or sanctioned WSN’s questionable action.

“I will continue to seek answers to these and related questions on behalf of the local and broader community,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
