Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea, has praised the efforts of two local high school students, who have been chosen from students across the nation, to compete at the International Science Olympiads.
In all, 13 of Australia’s best young scientific minds have been chosen to compete against hundreds of students from across the world in the areas of biology, chemistry and physics.
For two of the 13 students to be chosen from the Davidson Electorate is an honour the whole community can be proud of,” Mr O’Dea said.
I congratulate North Sydney Girls’ High School student, Fiona Naughton of St. Ives, who has been selected to compete in the Physics Olympiads in Mexico during July.
“The Olympiads will give me plenty of experience and the opportunity to meet like-minded people, so I’m really looking forward to it,” Fiona said.
“I’d love to develop a career as a researcher and discover new things and then put them into practice to help others,” she said.
“Congratulations also go to North Sydney Boys’ High School science whiz, Thomas Brereton of Killara, who has been chosen to represent Australia in the Biology Olympiads in Japan,” Mr O’Dea said.
“I have always had a fascination with science, particularly research on the Australian ecology,” Thomas said.
“I am hoping to one day help protect Australia’s fragile ecosystems and develop ways in which the human population can live without further destruction of the environment,” he said.
“I am sure the local community will join me in wishing both Fiona and Thomas good luck in representing their country at the International Science Olympiads,” Mr O’Dea said.
Major sponsors of the event include Merck Sharp and Dohme, Australian Science Innovations and Monash University.
