Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea, is encouraging parents and the general public to support Education Week activities from Sunday 24 May to Sunday 31 May.
“Davidson boasts excellent state schools with dedicated teachers and staff, committed to developing students to their full potential,” Mr O’Dea said.
The theme of this year’s Education week is ‘NSW Public Schools leading the way’ and will place a special focus on the environment, highlighting environmental initiatives and achievements.
“Public Schools in the local area perform wonderfully, despite an incompetent State Government,” Mr O’Dea said.
“A guided visit to Killara High School would highlight excellent achievements by teachers, staff and students. Also evident is the inadequate State Government funding for permanent classrooms, maintenance and additional school grounds.
The school is experiencing a shrinking natural environment as more demountable classrooms take over the school oval and grounds.
“The Labor Government has trumpeted its Technology for Learning Program. However, when I questioned Education and Training Minister, Verity Firth, about the number of laptop computers placed in Davidson schools under the program, the Government was found wanting.
“The Minister replied that just 56 laptop computers had been placed in Davidson Public Schools since April 2007 – that’s only about one every two weeks,” Mr O’Dea highlighted.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to support Public Schools during Education Week and applaud their achievements – despite a lack of support and leadership from a floundering State Government, which has clearly lost its way,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
