Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has welcomed a decision by the State Government owned WSN Environmental Solutions to now submit a Development Application to dump 160,000 tonnes of additional garbage at its Belrose landfill site.
“This would not have happened had it not been for sustained political and community pressure,” Mr O’Dea said.
“Initially, WSN Management tried to argue contrary to a clear 2004 undertaking from Chief Executive Officer Ken Kanofski that development consent would be obtained to permit any change to the agreed landform design.
“Following community meetings, media releases, Questions on Notice, a Notice of Motion, a speech in Parliament as well as many communications with WSN Environmental Solutions Management, they have finally agreed to submit a Development Application to dump additional garbage at the Belrose landfill site,” Mr O’Dea said.
“Full community consultation and input will be crucial in the DA assessment process, conducted by Warringah Council, as will expert views to satisfy engineering, environmental and safety concerns.
“The new DA must especially take account of the local and broader community by addressing key issues. These include the type of waste to be dumped; hours of operation; noise, dust and odour emissions; vehicle control; and new height limitations for landfill.
“Other matters, including future public access for recreational purposes, should also be properly addressed in complementary discussions between relevant stakeholders,” Mr O’Dea said.
I look forward to WSN better working with the local community. It is important that past uncertainty is replaced with certainty into the future for all involved,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
