Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea, has thrown his support behind National Blood Donor Week (15-21 September, 2008).
“I have given blood on a number of occasions and would encourage as many as possible to do the same,” Mr O’Dea said.
“Figures from The Australian Red Cross Blood Service show about 3% of residents in the Davidson electorate are registered blood donors.
“During National Blood Donor Week we especially acknowledge their generous service to the community.
“One of the best ways we can honour them is to join them and lift the local blood donor percentage above the national average of 1 in 30,” Mr O’Dea said.
“1 in 3 Australians will need blood at some stage during their lifetime and every blood donation helps save up to 3 lives, so blood donors are crucial for Davidson and the broader community,” he said.
Without blood donors, thousands of people who rely on blood and blood products to improve their quality of life would be affected. More than 30% of blood goes to help people with cancer and blood disorders. These ‘recipients’ may regularly need blood and blood products to help them either battle a disease or just to lead a normal life.
Other people may need blood during surgery or to treat heart, stomach and kidney disease.
Mums and babies can need blood as well as those involved in trauma incidents, like road accidents.
Mr O’Dea said, “Over the past two weeks, we have seen much ‘blood letting’ in state politics with questionable benefits to the community.
“Giving blood through the Red Cross Blood Bank however, brings real benefits.
I would encourage all who can, to call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au for further information,” Mr O’Dea said.
