Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea, has commended Ku-ring-gai Council on its initiative in trialing an innovative project to remove graffiti from both public and private property in local business centres.

Under the trial, specialist private contractors will patrol the centres and remove graffiti very soon after it appears.

“This program removes graffiti from not only the council’s own property but also from private property such as shopfronts in our major centres.

“It is good to see the Council assisting in the removal of this scourge on our local community,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I was personally involved in a community clean-up to repaint and remove graffiti from the old Killara post office last year.  Unfortunately graffiti reappeared in less than a month,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Hap-hazard solutions are ineffective and we need a vigilant, comprehensive response.

“While some people argue that graffiti is a minor nuisance to be tolerated, I believe that the sense of decay that comes with graffiti encourages further vandalism and promotes an environment leading more serious offences.   We need to be unwavering on ‘quality of life crimes’ such as graffiti and underage drinking in public parks and bus shelters.”

Jonathan O’Dea also congratulated the Council for extending a project for graffiti removal involving the Turramurra Rotary Club at the Turramurra town centre.

“We need to empower local communities and provide them with the tools to combat this cancer of the streets.”
