Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has warmly welcomed announced changes to NSW planning laws applying to the notification of neighbours regarding proposed works.
Mr O’Dea said, “For the first time, residents within a 20 metre radius of a complying development proposal in an established residential area, will need to be told 14 days before the application is approved.
They will also be given seven days notice before construction starts – up from only two days currently.
“The former notification requirements, introduced under the previous government, were woefully inadequate,” he said.
The amendments to the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development) will additionally make it easier for homeowners to make small renovations.
Mr O’Dea said, “The common-sense amendments will allow homeowners to undertake minor works, such as building fences, driveways and pathways without the need for planning approval, saving homeowners both time and money.
The amendments mean homeowners could save up to $7,000 on the cost of building a new home by having it approved as a complying development.
“I also welcome the strengthening of privacy rules (providing for effective screens on balconies and windows that overlook neighbours) as well as changes to rules regarding earthworks and significant trees to minimise impacts on neighbours and protect the environment,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
