Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has welcomed the announcement by NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Health Minister Jillian Skinner that the NSW Government has recruited a record number of nurses since the election.
For the first time, more than 47,500 nurses are now working in public hospitals across the state.
“The news of 340 more nurses in the Northern Sydney Local Health District, including the Davidson Electorate, is terrific news for patients, their families and carers,” Mr O’Dea said.
“The NSW Government is getting on with the job of supporting frontline staff and ensuring patients are provided with quality care when they need it most.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals made a pre-election commitment to recruit an additional 2,475 nurses for our state’s hospitals in our first term.
“In just two years, we have surpassed this goal and in a first for NSW, there are now an extra 4,000 nurses working in the state’s hospitals.
“This is in addition to the 900 extra doctors across the system as well as extra hospital staff and paramedics.
“I welcome the new nurses to Northern Sydney Local Health District and thank them for the life-saving work they do for patients,” Mr O’Dea said.
Health Minister Jillian Skinner said she was proud to see the NSW Government recruiting more nurses than ever before.
“Nurses are at the very heart of our hospital system and just halfway through our first term we have exceeded our target, with an extra 4000 nurses and midwives now working in our hospitals and the community, providing care to the people of NSW,” Mrs Skinner said.
