Member for Davidson Jonathan O’Dea today congratulated Dr Cathy Foley of St Ives Chase who was announced as the winner of the 2013 Premier’s Woman of the Year Award.

Mr O’Dea said Dr Cathy Foley is one of Australia’s leading scientists. Her research, much of which has been ground breaking, has earned Cathy numerous accolades and the respect and admiration of her peers.

“In addition to her own considerable achievements, Cathy has also championed the role of women in physics and science for the last 28 years,” Mr O’Dea said.

“I am delighted the Premier's Woman of the Year resides in the electorate of Davidson," he said.

When asked about her work and women’s participation in science, Dr Foley said "It is becoming increasingly clear that the role of the workplace in creating the right environment for women is critical if we are to embrace the full human potential."

Minister for Women Pru Goward said the Premier’s Award for Woman of the Year is an opportunity to highlight a woman who has demonstrated the highest level of excellence and who inspires our community with her achievements and contributions to NSW and beyond.

“This year more than 150 nominations were received for the Women of the Year Awards from across NSW, showcasing many incredible women and their significant achievements,” Ms Goward said.

Mr O'Dea also again congratulated the Davidson Electorate Woman of the Year, Catherine Knox.

"Catherine is a champion for mums. Many mothers who have suffered from perinatal anxiety and depression have benefited from her work.

"Both women are most worthy recipients of their awards," Mr O'Dea concluded.
