Long-term Warringah Councillor Julie Sutton, a nominee as NSW Woman of the Year, was honoured by Member for Davidson Jonathan O'Dea through a speech in NSW Parliament today.
Councillor Sutton, who will retire from Council in September, has dedicated over 30 years to her community through local government and a range of community groups.
"I commend Julie's strong commitment and perseverance over her many years of service," Mr O'Dea said.
"It has been a time of great change, with much for leaders like Julie to address.
"Julie has seen suburbia extending into the bush, a young population needing schools, recreation facilities and employment growth, as well as transport demands and social challenges associated with the influx of young citizens into the local area," he said.
Councillor Sutton was first elected to Warringah Council in 1980 and served for some years as Deputy Shire President before becoming the Council's first Mayor in 1995.
She grew up in Newcastle and attended the Universities of Newcastle, New England and Macquarie, completing a Master of Arts Honours and a Diploma of Education.
Julie taught languages in the Hunter Region before moving to Warringah to teach at Forest High School, Davidson High and finally Killarney Heights High for 21 years.
Julie Sutton still serves on the School Council for Forest High, is a loyal supporter of the Rural Fire Service, the State Emergency Service and Surf Life Saving. She is also the patron of many local sporting, cultural and community groups.
"I am inspired by Julie's dedication to her community and sure the local community joins me in wishing her well in her final few months on Council and for her future generally.
"On behalf of the Davidson electorate, I am pleased to have also nominated Councillor Sutton for NSW Woman of the Year," Mr O'Dea concluded.
Mr O'Dea's Parliamentary speech on Councillor Sutton was replied to by Wakehurst MP Brad Hazzard who was in the Minister's chair at the time and likewise recognised Julie Sutton's contribution.
