Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea has welcomed the launch of a telephone support service providing direct access to expert mental health advice 24 hours a day.

"The NSW Government’s 1800 011 511 Mental Health Line will ensure people with a mental health problem, their families and carers can access the care they need whenever and wherever they need it," Mr O'Dea said.

The Mental Health Line is a groundbreaking service that will, for the very first time, provide people with easy access to expert mental health advice through a single telephone number.

As a result, people will no longer need to search through complicated directories to find help for a mental health problem.

“This service really does mark a new era of mental health care in NSW; having access to this line will mean there will be somebody available 24/7 to help," Mr O'Dea said.

“By dialling just one number people can speak to a mental health professional and be directed to the most appropriate care in their local area."

Anyone with a mental health issue can use the Mental Health Line to link with a mental health professional and be directed to the most appropriate care.

The Mental Health Line will operate around the clock and will provide a telephone triage assessment and referral service staffed by mental health clinicians.

“It is important to remember however, that the Mental Health Line is not an emergency service," Mr O'Dea said.

"People in a life-threatening situation must still call 000 to receive immediate help.

Mr O'Dea said, "The Mental Health Line highlights the NSW Government’s commitment to improving mental health outcomes for the people of NSW."
