Member for Davidson, Jonathan O'Dea has urged families to become involved in Grandparents Day activities to recognise and celebrate the contribution grandparents make to family life and the broader community.
Mr O'Dea said NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell recently announced the inaugural Grandparents Day would be held this Sunday, 30 October.
“Grandparents play an invaluable role in families. They enrich the lives of their grandchildren and other children in the community by providing care, mentoring and stability,” Mr O'Dea said.
“Across the State, there are going to be various community events conducted by local councils and Clubs NSW.
“I encourage all local families to get involved and get in contact with the local council and clubs to find out more about what activities are on offer.
“Alternatively, families can plan their own get together at home, visit their grandparents or even give them a call to let them know how much they mean to them and to thank them for all the help they have provided over the years," Mr O'Dea said.
“Grandparents are the unsung heroes in our community, so it is fitting they are recognised with a day in their honour.
“The role of grandparents is more varied and diverse than ever before, with increasing numbers providing informal care and formal out-of-home care.
"NSW Grandparents Day will promote the value of grandparenting throughout NSW, acknowledging the contribution of grandparents and encouraging them to pass on their knowledge,” Mr O'Dea said.
