Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea says perpetrators of violent and other serious crime will receive tough jail sentences under new reforms of a re-elected Baird Government.

“Serious crime should equal serious time,” Mr O’Dea said.

Offenders convicted of gun-related crimes will face the full force of the law through reforms to the Standard Non-Parole Period (SNPP) for serious firearms offences.

NSW is a safer place under the Liberal & Nationals Government.

“Gun crime has come down, and we have given police the powers they need to tackle organised crime and gun-related matters,” Mr O’Dea said.

The Baird Government is acting on advice from the Sentencing Council to expand the SNPP, not only for serious gun offences but also for child sexual assault offences.

“The practical outcome of these changes will mean more consistent sentences and longer sentences,” Mr O’Dea said.

“For example, the offence of discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has a current average non-parole period of 5.23 years. The proposed new SNPP is 9 years.

“The Baird Government believes these measures will ensure sentences reflect the community’s expectations when it comes to serious crimes.” Mr O’Dea concluded.
