Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has welcomed the NSW Liberals & Nationals $123.35 million commitment of new money to secure more major events and boost the state’s visitor economy by an estimated $481 million if re-elected.
This additional $123.35 million represents a 25% budget boost and brings the total tourism and major events spend to over $643 million. The new money includes:
- $73.25 million more to make Sydney the number one destination for major events, including $22 million for more events in Western Sydney;
- $40.6 million more to grow regional tourism; and,
- $9.5 million more to target overseas visitors from our priority international markets.
Mr O’Dea said the 25% increase in tourism funding is a big win for the local community.
“I am thrilled the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government is committing the money needed to continue growing tourism in NSW,” Mr O’Dea said.
"Hotels, motels, restaurants and cafes can position themselves to share in the $481 million in economic benefits, which will create more jobs.
“Our local region has a variety of fantastic tourist attractions including National Parks, beaches and magnificent waterways. This funding injection should help bring more people to the area and stimulate the local economy,” Mr O’Dea said
Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Troy Grant said NSW has a proud record of not only delivering quality events, but also jobs.
“We are proud of the sector’s performance. It’s hoped a lower Australian dollar and lower oil prices will create economic conditions to favour growth and more jobs,” Mr Grant said.
“We are right behind the industry that’s worth more than $33 billion to the NSW economy and is responsible for 158,000 jobs, including 68,000 jobs in regional NSW,” Mr Grant said.
