Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has joined with Minister for Disability Services and Minister for Ageing, John Ajaka in applauding the commitment of more than 75,000 Meals on Wheels volunteers across Australia as part of National Meals on Wheels Day.
Mr Ajaka said the Meals on Wheels service makes it possible for older Australians and people with disability to stay in their homes through providing nutritious meals and social interaction as a result of regular visits.
Mr O’Dea said the NSW Government is committed to increasing independence and participation among seniors and people with disability.
“Through the dedication of volunteers under the Meals on Wheels program, vulnerable members of the community can remain in their homes and have access to nutritious food,” Mr O’Dea said
“This is a valuable program which highlights our strong community spirit and the significant contribution of volunteers, not just in NSW but around Australia.
“Earlier this year I joined the celebrations marking 55 years of service by the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby Meals on Wheels.
“I take this opportunity to once again thank the hardworking staff and volunteers who provide this valuable service.”
The Meals on Wheels organisation has assisted Australians for more than 60 years.
Over the past year volunteers have prepared and delivered 14 million meals to 60,000 people in need Australia-wide.
The Commonwealth and State Governments fund the Meals on Wheels service. This financial year the NSW contribution will provide over 400,000 meals to people with disability.
