Motorists and pedestrians making their way through the Warringah Road and Starkey Street intersection at Forestville can now enjoy a safer and smoother trip with a new pedestrian bridge delivered three months ahead of schedule.
Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea said the NSW Government’s $5 million funding of this essential intersection upgrade will improve safety and access to public transport.
“The installation of this new bridge and completion of the intersection upgrade is great news for the community, who can now cross Warringah Road more safely and enjoy improved traffic flow,” Mr O’Dea said.
“More than 100 pedestrians per hour previously used the signalised pedestrian crossing at Starkey Street during peak periods.”
Mr O’Dea said the work has improved traffic flow by removing the existing pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights on the western side of the intersection of Warringah Road and Starkey Street.
“More than 80,000 vehicles use this intersection each day, so it is essential to free up traffic and provide a safe crossing on one of the busiest roads in Sydney’s north,” Mr O’Dea said.
A number of key features of the pedestrian bridge and surrounds will serve the community for years to come. These include:
- New lifts accommodating up to 15 passengers as well as scooters, bicycles and prams, as well as access via curved stairs
- New bicycle racks installed on both sides of the bridge near the lifts
- New fencing at the intersection and along the centre median strip
- Upgrade and construction of footpaths near the bridge and bus stops
- Safety fencing, throw screens and protective roof over the pedestrian bridge
- Relocation of the eastbound bus stop and shelter to the eastern side of the intersection
