Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea, today named Mrs Yvonne Taylor, a resident of Killara, as the 2018 Local Woman of the Year.
“Yvonne has dedicated her life to inspiring youth from all classes and cultures to contribute to their local communities. This is highly commendable and worthy of widespread recognition,” Mr O’Dea said.
Having studied a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma of Education, then later a Masters of Arts in Migration Studies, Yvonne worked as a teacher, including for ESL, and an Assistant School Principal. She has around 30 years of experience teaching in schools with high multicultural populations.
She served on the Ministerial Committee overseeing the first Aboriginal Education Curriculum for NSW; and is still involved in the Peer Support Program at Killara High School.
Yvonne has also faithfully served through the Lindfield Rotary Club over many years, including as President for two terms. Yvonne is currently on the Lindfield Rotary Club Board of Directors as Club Director for Youth Service and the Club Executive for Membership.
As part of her Rotary role, she has chaired the Rotary Youth Leadership Award for her District, a residential program aimed at leadership development and encouraging social skills amongst young adults aged 18 to 27 years.
She has also campaigned strongly against the practice of female genital mutilation in all its forms.
“Yvonne’s generous spirit and ongoing commitment to serving youth are a wonderful example for others to follow. I am pleased to acknowledge her as the 2018 Local Woman of the Year for the Davidson electorate,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
