The long awaited Barra Brui Hockey Centre in St Ives has secured a vital NSW Government grant of $2.25 million.
Both Jonathan O’Dea, Member for Davidson and Alister Henskens, Member for Ku-ring-gai welcomed the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund grant for the Northern Sydney and Beaches Hockey Association.
“I am delighted to convey the fantastic news of $2.25 million for a new hockey facility in St Ives. Players and fans of cricket, futsal and football should also benefit from this new infrastructure,” Mr O’Dea said.
“It’s vitally important to support hockey, which is a major sport for many people across the region, including residents of Ku-ring-gai,” Mr Henskens added.
Improvements to existing facilities at Barra Brui Oval include the development of a synthetic wet-based hockey pitch, fencing, portable netting and goals, adjustable LED lighting, sheltered dug-outs, LED scoreboard and video recording area.
A new water harvesting, filtration, treatment and recycling system will also be installed to contain run-off, reducing fresh water use by 80% and minimising the Hockey Centre’s environmental footprint.
David Johnston, President of the Northern Sydney and Beaches Hockey Association said he was truly delighted with the state government’s support and partnership in addressing the growing need for local hockey facilities.
“Hockey is a vibrant family sport of more than 5500 local participants, with established success as an inclusive activity for all demographics. A step forward in facilities will help propel local hockey into an exciting new phase featuring innovation and growth in participation interest,” Mr Johnston said.
Ku-ring-gai Council has indicated that further public consultation is required for the Barra Brui Hockey Centre project, with consultation and environmental assessment results expected to be reported to the Council by June 2019.
$3.5 million funding was also granted for an Indoor Sports Centre at St Ives High School.
