Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is calling on local residents to help tackle drink container litter by having their say on the NSW Government’s container deposit scheme (CDS) discussion paper – the next step in delivering on the government’s election commitment to introduce a cost-effective container deposit scheme.
The discussion paper is designed to encourage comment and feedback on how a container deposit scheme should operate in NSW and some of the scheme’s key design principles.
“The NSW Government is committed to reducing litter and this is an opportunity for the local community to help shape the design of the NSW CDS, to get litter out of our streets, parks, beaches and waterways,” Mr O’Dea said.
“The Premier has made it his priority to reduce the volume of litter in NSW by 40 per cent by 2020.
“Every year about 160 million drink containers are littered across NSW communities, so it’s clear we must act to help preserve our local natural environment.
“A cost-effective container deposit scheme will help cut down on this litter, make it easier for our communities to recycle and improve our neighbourhoods for everyone to enjoy,” Mr O’Dea said.
Environment Minister Mark Speakman said the container deposit scheme advisory committee, which contributed invaluable input into the development of the discussion paper, was established to provide expertise in environmental matters, industry operations, recycling, innovation, behavioural psychology, local government and litter management.
“More than 100 stakeholders have provided support and input to the committee,” Mr Speakman said.
The government has committed to implementing a container deposit scheme by 1 July 2017. Public consultation is open until 26 February 2016.
