The community is invited to comment on a proposed new pedestrian bridge at the Starkey Street and Warringah Road intersection at Forestville which aims to reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users.

Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea said Roads and Maritime Services is proposing to remove the pedestrian crossing at the Warringah Road and Starkey Street traffic lights and install a new pedestrian bridge over Warringah Road east of Starkey Street.

“The proposed pedestrian bridge aims to minimise delays and improve road safety on Warringah Road through Forestville, improve access for public transport and pedestrian safety,” Mr O’Dea said.

“A large number of pedestrians cross at this busy intersection every day to access local shops, schools and community facilities and meet bus services.”

Roads and Maritime recently surveyed more than 100 pedestrians crossing at this intersection each hour in the morning peak which can contribute to congestion as road users are stopped for 30 seconds each time the crossing is activated.

The proposed bridge design has a simple and elegant form, which reduces the height of the lifts and stairs. It includes bicycle parking facilities, curved stair access from both sides and safety fencing and screens. Roads and Maritime Services would use its standard pedestrian bridge design featuring a tied arch, supported by the lift shafts with a glazed front for security.

Member for Wakehurst Brad Hazzard said the community is now invited to give feedback to the review of environmental factors (REF) for the Starkey Street Pedestrian Bridge.

“I encourage local residents to have their say and attend the community meetings to provide valuable local feedback to RMS,” Mr Hazzard said.

Two community information sessions will be held on the proposal where the project team will be available to answer questions and receive feedback on Thursday 18 June between 12.30pm and 2.30pm at the Forestville Memorial Hall on the corner of Starkey Street and Warringah Road in Forestville and on Saturday 20 June from 10am to 12pm at the Forestville Senior Citizens Centre, corner Starkey Street and Warringah Road at Forestville.

Community members can view the REF in hard copy until Friday 26 June at the Forestville Library, Belrose Library and Warringah Council.

Roads and Maritime will consider all comments in finalising the project design and provide the community with updates throughout the project. Community submissions will be responded to in a report as part of the next stage of planning. For more information visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au
