Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is urging recreational fishing clubs to apply for grants to help run local fishing activities on the second annual Go Fishing day, to be held on 16 October 2016.
“There are currently around 850,000 people who love wetting a line each year in NSW. Go Fishing Day provides another opportunity to promote fishing as an enjoyable part of our lifestyle. The fishing tourism sector also brings millions of dollars each year,” Mr O’Dea said.
Fishing clubs are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $2,000 to run fishing activities on Go Fishing Day, such as casting and fishing workshops, information sessions and so on. Activities to restore fish habitat on the day are also eligible, such as replanting river and creek banks.
The inaugural NSW Fishing Day was held last December and was a huge success, with thousands of people visiting six regional locations where a range of fun filled fishing activities took place.
Go Fishing Day events will again be hosted at a minimum of six locations across the state, in places like Port Macquarie, Newcastle, Sydney, Illawarra, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga.
Activities will include free ‘try fishing’ sessions for beginners, adults and children (five years and older), goodie bags with lots of ‘fishy’ giveaways, casting competitions and expert advice from DPI Fisheries staff.
The 2016 Go Fishing NSW Day will also coincide with the first–ever National Fishing Day being coordinated by the Australian Fishing Trade Association.
