Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is motivating the community to get behind a cause that would make the area much cleaner.

“I call upon the community to get involved with Graffiti Removal Day on Sunday, 26 October. I am also encouraging people to promote the day on social media or simply spread the word among family and friends,” Mr O’Dea said.

The NSW Government and Rotary Down Under are running the event with the support of community minded sponsors.

“Graffiti Removal Day has been expanding every year, as public awareness continues to grow. Last year, close to 150 sites were cleaned up,” Mr O’Dea said.

People can become involved in Graffiti Removal Day by completing a registration from at http://www.graffitiremovalday.org.au/ or by registering on the day at one of the clean-up sites.

“Anyone over the age of 12 can receive training, graffiti removal equipment and protective gear on the day. Participants will range from young school students to professionals and retirees. The vast damage and destruction of graffiti impacts on everyone in the community,” Mr O’Dea said.

Hundreds of people across the state will take part in Graffiti Removal Day, clearing thousands of square metres of unsightly graffiti and saving the NSW Government and local councils many thousands of dollars.

Mr O’Dea said, “Graffiti detracts from the environment and costs the state over $100 million a year.

“I am pleased that new graffiti laws give NSW police more flexibility when dealing with graffiti offenders.

“The laws are designed to restrict graffiti and encourage charging under the Graffiti Control Act so that clean-up orders and community service orders can be applied more often by magistrates,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
