Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is reminding motorists that students return to school next week and to be particularly watchful around schools.
“This especially applies during the morning and afternoon peak periods for student movements,” he said.
At St Ives, there will changed traffic conditions outside Sir Eric Woodward School following the installation of a new school zone.
Mr O’Dea said a new 40 km/h school zone is being installed along Ayres and Acron Roads and Athena Avenue to increase safety for school children.
“Roads and Maritime Services recently carried out a review of the road after a request from the school,” Mr O’Dea said.
“After the review was completed, it was determined a school zone needed to be established as these roads provide direct access points to the school.
“In general, 40 km/h school zones are provided on roads with an active direct access point from the school.
“School zones help protect children on their way to and from school at times and places where they are often present in high numbers.
“This lower speed limit will reduce the risk and potential severity of a crash,” Mr O’Dea said.
The new 40 km/h school zone will operate from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on gazetted school days.
Mr O’Dea said motorists are reminded to drive to the speed limits at all times for the safety of all road users.
The new school zone will commence on Monday 29 January.
