Minister for the Arts, Don Harwin and Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea have announced that Roseville author Ms Shankari Nadanachandran will receive funding from the NSW Government to develop her career, and support the creation of new work.
Ms Nadanachandran will receive $5000 through the Early Career Writer Grant funding initiative administered by the NSW Writers’ Centre on behalf of Create NSW.
The money will cover a 3‐week trip to Sri Lanka and help with the next stage of writing her novel, Phantom Limb, a political thriller set in Sri Lanka at the end of the civil war.
To complete the novel, Ms Nadanachandran will conduct research with human rights activists, field surgeons, journalists, UN officials and survivors of the war.
NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said, “The quality of work from our NSW authors and writing organisations goes from strength to strength and I am particularly pleased to see the variety of themes and cultural backgrounds coming through from our applicants this year.
“It is a pleasure to be able to provide more opportunities that foster innovation in writing culture for the state and I am excited to see the works that are made possible through this initiative.”
Jonathan O’Dea added, “It is fantastic to have our local writing talent recognised and we are very pleased to hear that Ms Nadanachandran has been awarded funding through the NSW Writers’ Centre.”
Under the funding this year three authors, two organisations and one joint program were awarded $27,000, with $3,000 reserved for writers to attend professional development events.
