Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has called on his NSW Government colleagues to provide more funding for Northern Sydney school education capital works in the 20 June state budget.
Mr O’Dea said work is progressing well on transforming the former University of Technology Sydney (UTS) site in Lindfield to a new K-12 school campus, to operate from 2019, but more needs to be done to assist existing schools expand capacity.
“Despite the fantastic new building work a few years ago, Killara High School is still in desperate need of more classrooms to cope with student numbers,” Mr O’Dea said.
“A repeat of the multi-million dollar funding injection by the NSW Liberals Government would make a major impact in addressing desperately needed new classrooms and other facilities at Killara High.
“There are still too many demountable classrooms taking up recreational and sporting areas and subjecting students to less than ideal learning environments. We need more classrooms,” Mr O’Dea said.
“St Ives High School is also in need of new classrooms as well as additional sport and recreational facilities.
“Such enhanced new school sports and recreational facilities could be shared with the public, providing a win-win for students and the local community.
“St Ives North Public School is another school in desperate need of more classrooms to cope with increased demand.
“School representatives have met with me to highlight the difficulties in accommodating the growing number of students wishing to attend the St Ives North School. I strongly support their cause,” Mr O’Dea said.
A timely response to the needs of these schools, along with the ongoing $40 million redevelopment of the UTS site, will help address the important educational needs of our students and local community.
