A new multi-million dollar sports facility for the northern beaches is a step closer, with Warringah Council considering a Development Application (DA), and a separate assessment underway to select an operator.
Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea said, “$3.5 million is in trust, ready to be spent on new facilities for the former Belrose landfill site.
“I am pleased the landfill site has now been closed, consistent with promises made to the community. I look forward to seeing the area transformed into a new recreational space for bike riders and others.
“Only one letter of objection to the DA was received, meaning the DA is expected to be assessed internally and approved within a fortnight,” Mr O’Dea said.
Owner of the site, the Waste Assets Management Corporation (WAMC), has received two Expressions of Interest (EOI) from parties waiting to operate the new facility.
In accordance with government guidelines an evaluation committee will assess the applications. A final decision on the EOIs will be delayed until the DA consent conditions are known as they may warrant amendment to the two submissions.
Mr O’Dea said, “The evaluation committee needs to be confident the successful entity would sustain an appropriate commitment to the lease over its full term. It is expected the initial lease will be for three years with potential to extend.
“I have been a strong advocate for transforming the former Belrose landfill site into a bike park for many years.
“Feedback from the community indicates there is a strong demand for the facility, from both inside and outside the local area.
“I am pleased the DA approval appears imminent and that two parties have indicated interest in operating the new venture.” Mr O’Dea concluded.
