Councillor Sue Heins, of Warringah Council, has been nominated for a Ministers’ Award for Women in Local Government. She was nominated by Jonathan O’Dea, Member for Davidson, in the “Elected Representatives” category.
Mr O’Dea said the awards focus on women in local government who have contributed at both council and community level to achieve beneficial outcomes.
In addition to her role as a local councillor, Sue Heins has been a local business owner, a volunteer for local not-for-profit organisations and involved in both business networking for women as well as helping young people with career paths.
When Sue was Deputy Mayor, she gained support for the introduction of an International Women’s Day event in the local area, which Warringah Council plans to continue on an annual basis.
Sue also established a gender equity advisory committee and business economic committee at the Council. The gender equity advisory committee enables women to be more proactive in applying for senior jobs at the Council.
“Sue is a local business owner, a past volunteer for the Warringah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Business Enterprise Centre and the Northern Beaches Business Education Network. She also runs a women’s business networking group called Inspiring Women.” Mr O’Dea said.
“I am very pleased to nominate Sue for this award. She continues to support her local community and fights hard for women to be well represented and supported at the local government level,” Mr O’Dea concluded.
Nominees for the award will be judged by a panel according to their achievements, with the winners being announced on 3 March at NSW Parliament House.
