Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea has encouraged the community to visit their local volunteer fire brigade this Saturday (13 September) for the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Open Day.
“The annual RFS Open Day provides an opportunity for residents to meet the volunteers who devote themselves to protecting our community from day to day,” Mr O’Dea said.
“Residents will also be given the opportunity to understand the bushfire risk in their area and how they can prepare themselves, their houses and their families,” he said.
Mr O’Dea has encouraged the community to consider joining the NSW RFS and to use the Open Day to find out about the different roles available.
“The NSW RFS is the world’s largest volunteer firefighting agency with 74,000 volunteers. It has been fantastic to see the recent increase in numbers, but we always need more volunteers to keep our communities safe,” Mr O’Dea said.
NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said there’ll be something for everyone who drops in to their local brigade station this Saturday, with more than 300 brigades opening their doors across the State.
“Many brigades will hold demonstrations, showing the public their firefighting skills and the important role they play during emergencies,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.
“I’d encourage all local residents to take advantage of their local NSW RFS Open Day, join in the fun and thank our NSW RFS volunteers for the invaluable work they do.”
At their local station people will find something for all the family including:
- Fire demonstrations
- The opportunity to climb on a fire truck
- Obtain advice on preparing properties and completing a Bush Fire Survival Plan
- Have photos taken with local firefighters
At some locations there may be displays by other emergency services, jumping castles, face painting, and sausage sizzles.
