A public hearing will be held next Monday (8 September) by the NSW Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to hear evidence about social housing tenancy management.

PAC Chair, Jonathan O’Dea MP, said the hearing provides an important opportunity to hear from stakeholders in social housing.”

“A broad cross section of the community will be present including not-for-profit housing providers, client and employee advocates, landlords and tenant advisers.”

The inquiry will examine both the cost effectiveness of social housing tenancy management and the delivery of related support services to tenants.

“A feature of many of the submissions the Committee has received has been concern that the delivery of social housing costs and outcomes are not well measured,” Mr O’Dea said.

“Indeed, there is debate amongst stakeholders about whether the provision of social housing is best managed and measured as a discrete activity, or an integral part of an integrated suite of social welfare services.”

“A central focus of our inquiry will be how to best utilise and measure the performance of the resources directed towards social housing to efficiently and effectively meet the needs of both tenants and the broader community, particularly ensuring that vulnerable people are treated sensitively and fairly,” Mr O’Dea said.

The Public Accounts Committee will hold a second public hearing into tenancy management in social housing on Monday 15 September 2014.
