Member for Davidson, Jonathan O’Dea is reminding local residents and community groups to check their gas and electrical barbeques and to be proactive when it comes to maintenance in preparation for a hot summer.
“Over coming weeks in the lead up the Christmas, many people across the region will host Christmas party barbeques with friends and colleagues,” Mr O’Dea said.
“If you haven’t already done so, now is the time to check that your barbeque is ready for the summer season,” he said.
Gas connections should be regularly checked for leaks using soapy water. Also regularly check hoses and fittings for damage or wear and replace these parts when needed.
Gas bottles must always be transported securely in the upright position in a cool space that is well ventilated – they must never be left in a closed vehicle.
Avoid using electric barbeques in the rain, near water or too close to pools and do not use barbeques with charcoal briquettes or other fuel products, including gas, inside confined spaces.
All gas appliances, including barbeques and portable camping equipment, must be certified to be legally sold in New South Wales. All electric barbecues must be approved and marked.
Owners of gas barbeques and portable appliances, including small cookers and camping lanterns, should check to make sure they are in good order and have the relevant approval marks before connecting to gas.
Always check for leaks before lighting, and when lit, be aware of any unusual flame appearance or smells. Conduct any checks in a clear, safe location.
Mr O’Dea said, “We need to make barbeque safety a priority this summer.”
